Diving Accident at Bedford Pool
2nd March 2003
Most of us in diving are aware that an accident took place at Robinson Pool, Bedford in early March. Unsurprisingly there have been a number of rumours circulating as to what occured and who was involved.
This is the first major accident in the UK for about 20 years and there is obviously a need to let everyone be aware of both the circumstances and consequences of this incident. The family involved have kindly agreed to the information being made available.
The diver is Simon Whitworth (19), who worked as a lifeguard at the Pool. He was for some years a diver with Bedford Eagles, and although he had given up serious competition he still enjoyed diving and was planning to dive in Masters competitions in the future. On the 2nd March, Simon struck the 5 metre platform while attempting an Inward 1 1/2 Somersaults, resulting in fractured vertebrae in his neck, damaging his spinal cord. He was taken to Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge.
Simon's condition has improved a little and once he is sufficiently stable, it is hoped that he will be moved to the Spinal Injuries unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
In a situation like this it is vital that Simon receives as much support as possible from the outside. This will be crucial to helping him keep positive and prepared to work hard to regain his mobility.
If anyone wishes to send Simon a message, Barbara Heathfield has agreed to pass on anything to him as she is in close contact with his family and visits Simon regularly. Barbara's E-mail is b.heathfield@ntlworld.com.
Anything you can do will be greatly appreciated by Simon and his family.
