Scoring
In competitions, divers are awarded points up to 10 by each of a panel of judges. In international competition, there are seven judges, although this may be reduced to five, or even three, in less exacting events. Each member of the panel scores a dive based on elements such as approach, take-off, execution and entry into the water.
Nine judges assess synchronised diving. Four judge the execution of individual dives, and five assess synchronisation - how the pairs mirror timing, height, distance, speed of rotation and entry into the water.
The highest and lowest marks awarded are disregarded, and the scores from the remaining judges are added together. This score is then multiplied by the degree of difficulty (or 'tariff') of the dive, which is based on the number and types of manoeuvres attempted, such as somersaults, pikes, tucks and twists.
FINA stipulates the following scores for a dive:

Dive Numbers
Each dive is ascribed a code number, as described below:
4 Character Dive Numbers, starting with 1-4, eg 203C |
||
First digit: the direction of rotation
1 | (eg: 101B) | Forward dive, performed by moving forward down the board, initiating the dive after a hurdle. Somersaults may then be performed in a forward direction. |
2 | (eg: 201B) | Back dive, performed by standing at the end of the board with the diver's back toward the water and initiating the dive backward, away from the board. |
3 | (eg: 301B) | Reverse dive, performed by moving forward down the board, initiating the dive after a hurdle. Somersaults may be performed rotating backward, with the head moving back toward the board. |
4 | (eg: 401B) | Inward dive, performed by standing at the end if the board with the diver's back toward the water and initiating the dive inward, toward the board. |
Second digit: initial position of flight
0 | (eg: 103B) | Unspecified position. This is most common. |
1 | (eg: 113B) | Flying dive, where the first portion of the dive is in a straight, or flying, position. |
Third digit: somersaults
(eg: 303B) | The number of half somersaults to be performed.
Last character: position
A | (eg: 103A) | Straight position. |
B | (eg: 103B) | Pike position, knees straight, bending at the hip. |
C | (eg: 103C) | Tuck position, bending at both the knees and the hip. |
5 Character Dive Numbers, starting with '5', eg 5132D |
||
First digit | ||
5 | (eg: 5132D) | Denotes a twisting dive. |
Second digit: the direction of rotation
1 | (eg: 5151B) | Forward takeoff |
2 | (eg: 5251B) | Backward takeoff |
3 | (eg: 5351B) | Reverse takeoff |
4 | (eg: 5451B) | Inward takeoff |
Third digit: somersaults
(eg: 5132D) | The number of half somersaults
Fourth digit: twists | ||
(eg: 5132D) | The number of half twists
Last character: position
(eg: 5132D) | 'D', the free position using a combination of shapes, is used for twisting single somersaults and 11/2 somersaults. Other positions (A, B, or C) must be designated for all other dives. |
Dive Numbers starting with 6, eg '612B' |
||
First digit: | ||
6 | (eg: 612B) | Denotes an armstand dive |
Second digit: direction of rotation
0 | (eg: 600A) | No rotation (i.e. armstand dive) |
1 | (eg: 612B) | Forward |
2 | (eg: 622B) | Backward |
3 | (eg: 632B) | Reverse |
Third digit: somersaults
(eg: 612B) | The number of half somersaults
Fourth digit: twists (where shown, is the only indication of twisting)
(eg: 6122D) | The number of half twists
Last character: position
A | (eg: 611A) | Straight position |
B | (eg: 611B) | Pike position |
C | (eg: 611C) | Tuck position |
D | (eg: 6122D) | Free position, used only with twisting dives |
